Custom envelope layout

Hi,

In trying to put a return address on my Christmas card envelopes (which are
not COM 10) I ran into a problem. I formatted a document as a custom paper
size for my envelope and typed in the return address. (landscape) This
worked fine. The envelope printed out appropriately for my printer. Then I
got fancy and put the return address in a textbox and grouped that with a
snowman graphic. All of a sudden the address shifted to printing on a
letter-size page instead of on my envelope.

I worked around this by setting up a letter-sized page with margins that put
the address & graphic where I want it, but I am curious. Any advice on how I
should be doing this?

I'm using Word 2003 for this.

Hi Graham,

I hadn't seen these but have now. I do use EnvelopeExtra1 for my return
address in my letterhead templates. Even without a graphic it allows much
nicer formatting than does the standard return address format.

My problem is that I am trying to create an envelope template that just
prints an envelope (actually, just prints a return address on an envelope)
when the envelope is not a standard size. I have 4x6 and 5x7 envelopes and
in between. On my printer, the return address is printed at the end of the
page so if I use my COM10 template it prints off the page. I have solved the
problem imperfectly by putting the address on a landscape letter-size page
in such a place that it prints correctly on the envelope.

My question is long term, I made a template for an envelope. It worked fine.
The return address was in the correct place. I then added a graphic and all
of a sudden the envelope is printing as if it were a letter-size page. (I
use an HP LJ6L and it normally prints envelopes in the center of the platen
rather than at an edge.) This puzzles me.

I think you'll find that when the printer is not predisposed to handle
custom page sizes that it loses the plot. Word relies on that driver for
correct formatting. Youll probably need to work with a standard envelope
size and fix the margins to give the desired result.
