Custom Field - Drop Down Grayed Out

I have built several lokup tables and custom fields and built a custom
view off of the Gantt chart view. The custom fields are built in the
Task entity. When you try to populate this field, the drop downs are
grayed out. However, if you double click the task and open the advanced
area, you can fill them out there. Any idea why this is occurring?
