Custom format solution

I am preparing word lists for phonics classes. I have over 5000 words broken
down by categories.

In each category, I need to bold type the target letters.

For example, in the list I need to bold face the 'ch' in all the words on
the list.

chain

chair

chalk

change

chap

chapter

beach

bench

branch

bunch

church

clinch

Is it possible to do this in any office application?

I know doing so is not a regular option in formatting, so could it be done
with some type of macro or script?

What do ya know... you can do this in Word!

Geez, I guess you can learn something new everyday!

Does this mean that you've solved the problem? (presumably using
Find/Replace, in which you search for "ch", for example, and apply bold
formatting to it in the Replace with: box).

Note: you can also press Ctrl+B in the Find what: and Replace with: boxes,
rather than having to use the More - Format - Font settings. Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U
and a number of other shortcuts work as well. Note also that pressing Ctrl+B
(or I, U, etc.) cycles among Bold, Not Bold and off. If you choose Not Bold
in Find what:, for example, then it will explicitly search for matching text
that does not have bold formatting applied. If neither Bold nor Not Bold
shows up, then bold status is ignored in the search.
