Custom Formatting changes £ to $ after Crystal Reports Export

Export from Crystal Reports into .xls format. Excel opens the spreadsheet, but formats cells containing '£' as 'custom', instead of 'currency'.
ALL regional settings are correct. However, Excel decides to use '$' in the 'custom' field instead of '£'.

Is there any fix for this, aside from manually formatting the cells after opening the spreadsheet?
