Custom Page Numbers - Displaying in TOC & Indexes

Hi there:

I have a document containing several sections. I also have an index I've
inserted. To make the document & index easier to navigate, I've
differentiated the page numbering by appending a letter to the page number in
accordance with the section you're viewing. For example, the Glossary
section pages are numbered "G-1," "G-2," et cetera.

However, when I generate the index, the letter I've appended (by editing the
page field code for the page) the appended letter doesn't appear in the index
reference. So for the example I've given above, the page numbers associated
with index entries are missing the "G." Is there a way to get the index to
include the appended letter?

Okay. Thank you for the answer!

Do I need to use Outline numbering in order to assign chapter numbers? I
ask because I do not want outline numbering in the document.

You have to get a "number" (which can be a letter) into some level of
heading somewhere somehow. If you're not using all the heading levels, you
could pick some unused ones, apply A, B, C numbering with the desired "start
at" value, and insert a dummy heading formatted as Hidden or white so that
it doesn't print; I *think* Word can still pick it up from the paragraph.
Use as many levels as needed for the various parts (one for G, one for
another letter, etc.), changing the heading level in "Include chapter
number" as required. It's a wasteful way to use headings, but it's the only
out I can see.
