Custom Toolbar Settings Disappearing

B

Brad Reichert

In Excel 97 (on Win98) after a user customizes their toolbars, they exit and
the settings revert back to default. There is a username8.xlb files in
C:\Windows but it gets changed back to defaults. Toolbars can be customized
fine in Word.

Any suggestions what might be causing this?

Thanks,

Brad

Hi Brad,
When I have a several changes to make, I make a point
of closing all of the unhidden workbooks, then unhiding
the personal.xls workbook. Make the changes, save
the workbook (personal.xls) and exit Excel. Then open
Excel, hide the personal.xls file and continue.

other things concerning toolbars
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/toolbars.htm

Options are determined by the first workbook opened,
which for most people would be their personal.xls file,
it seems to affect the toolbars as well even though there
is only one. I'm just paranoid and superstitious and don't
want to break the cycle if it works so you might experiment
if you like.

I would suggest backing up your toolbars and taking
a screen print that you can save somewhere.

Incidentally your toolbars file is updated every time you
close Excel so if you have more than one you can see
which one is actually used by looking at the timestamp.

Hi Brad,
If you have a personal.xls workbook for you macros, it would
be the first workbook to be opened because anything in your
XLSTART folder is started when Excel is started and it should
(normally) be the only workbook there.

Hiding the personal.xls makes the macros available to
other workbooks without specifying the workbook
name. For functions you still have to specify the workbook
that the function is in.

To unhide the personal.xls workbook
Window, Unhide, (uncheck) personal.xls

To hide the personal.xls workbook (if you have one)
Window, Hide, (check) personal.xls

To make your function or subroutine accessible to all of your workbooks,

Apparently I'm totally lost.
I open excel and book1 opens.
I go to Window and unhide is gray.

What am I missing?

Hi Brad,
That means that you don't have a personal.xls workbook,
and your options in use will vary depending on the first
workbook that you open.

Where does Excel reside. Would that be on each person's PC,
or on a network drive. Is the date timestamp on the .xlb file
that you see being changed each time you close Excel.
