You have to tell Word to save your toolbar to normal.dot AND when you close
Word you have to answer YES to the question to Save Changes to the Global
Template.
However, that isn't the best way to do it. The best way is to create a new
template (call it something like MyToobars.dot) and create and save your
custom Toolbar to this template.
Then (assuming that this is a standalone computer) place the template in
Documents and Settings, Username, Applications Data, Microsoft, Word,
Startup. Open Word and make sure that under Tools, Options, File Locations,
the Startup entry is pointing at the correct location.
Now the Template (and thus the Toolbar) will be available as a global
add-in. (see under Tools, Templates and Addins and it will be listed and
checked). Normal.dot will be kept to a minimum size and if it every
corrupts, it doesn't matter. If you have loads of custom macros and AutoText
entries, you can do exactly the same for them - though preferably keeping
them in their own templates. It also makes it easy to transfer the
customisations to a new computer.
:I use word 2003 I am able to create a custom toolbar but can only retain it
: by making it available to Document1 and then saving that as a template.
Then
: delete the normal.dot template and renam your new template as normal.dot.
: Why do I have do to it this way as previous verison allowed adding custom
: toolbars?
