Custom View Error Message

D

Debbie

I am the Administrator on our MSP 2002 application and
have created several custom views in the Enterprise
Global. I have also created several Templates and placed
them in the Enterprise Templates which the Project
Managers use to create their projects.

My problem is this: The project manager has used the
Template to create his project and has saved it to the
database. The next time the project is brought up, a
message box appears that says: "There is a table named
(references one of my custom tables) in this project that
cannot be overwritten. Press OK to rename it or Cancel to
cancel." When OK is hit another box comes up that
says: "New name for task table from (project name)" with a
space to rename the table. I have instructed the PMs to
name it and then they can continue working. I then go
into the organizer and delete the table.

When I have looked at these renamed views, they are
identical to those in my global. I am truly stumped as to
why the view is becomming corrupted when it is
transitioned from a template to a project. Does anyone
have any idea what is happening? I have spent an enormous
amount of time on this issue and would like to see some
resolution. I appreciate any input.
Thanks very much, Debbie

Debbie:

While you were creating the new Project views, you accidentally polluted the
enterprise global. With the enterprise global open, as you changed views to
create them, you unknowingly copied the views and tables into the Enterprise
global. You need to clean out the duplicates from there. See:

Yep,

I found this too. I don't know if this is the best way,
but it worked.

I opened the templates, and then went to Tools/Organizer.
On the Tables/Views/Fields menus I deleted everthing in
the right side, which is the template's global fields and
then copied everything from the left side, which is the
cached enterprise global fields to my template's global
fields. Note, there are resource and task fields on some
of the menues, and you can't delete the fields for the
active window, so when your done go back and change the
view and do it again.

Remember to delete the templates in Project Server,
otherwise, you have to use a different name.

Hope this helps.

Another best practice is to create the views in Project without connecting
to Project Server, or without opening the Enterprise Global. Once the views
are created, they can be safely copied into the Enterprise Global through
the organizer.

Thanks for the assistance. Please clarify for me. I now
have several custom views/tables in the Enterprise
Global. Should I delete these views from the Enterprise
Global thru the Organizer then re-create the views in
Project and then copy these views to the Enterprise Global?

Thanks again for the help, Debbie

Debbie:

You need to clean out the duplicate objects from the enterprise global.
First checkout the enterprise global, then open the organizer and remove the
duplicates. It's not your custom views that are the problem, unless you
named one the same as a non-enterprise view. It's the objects that got
inadvertently copied into the global that are causing the problem.

Debbie:

It could be views, tables, etc. The errors you get should tell what they
are.
