Customizing Toolbars etc.

I've been trying to customize my Outlook toolbars, but
each time I close Outlook after doing all the
customization, the next time I open Outlook they're back
the way they were before I did anything. I've looked
everywhere for some setting(s) that indicate saving the
appearance, but couldn't find any. What am I
missing/doing wrong?

Try renaming your outcmd.dat file to outcmd.old while Outlook is closed.
Outlook will rebuild the default toolbars the next time you open it. If
your changes to the toolbars "stick" after doing this, then you know it was
the outcmd.dat file causing the problem. Make sure to make a backup of the
new outcmd.dat file (after you make your desired customizations) so you can
restore it if you ever run into the same problem again.

Note: If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to search in hidden
and system folders to find the outcmd.dat file.

Thanks Jocelyn,
That worked. I had trouble renaming the old file, as
it kept giving me an error that some other program was
using it, and I noticed that the little "Mail" icon was
in the systray & I couldn't get rid of it. Also,
sporadically, the Office Assistant would not go away when
I closed Outlook. I don't know if maybe both of those
things were the fault of the outcmd.dat file, but now
they're not doing that anymore. I finally rebooted into
safe mode, renamed the outcmd.dat successfully, then
rebooted normally, and now it all works. Thanks again.

Sometimes an add-in will keep Outlook running after you've supposedly closed
it (some fax software does this, for example). If you close Outlook but
still see Outlook.exe running in the Processes section of Task Manager (if
your Windows version offers Task Manager), you'll know something else is
keeping it open.
