Cut and paste option is not available (was working last week)

I am unable to cut and paste. The cut and paste icons are not lit up to be
selected and control 'x' and 'v" etc doesn't work either.

It has worked previously.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Well, Paste doesn't "light up" until there is something Cut or Copied - IOW,
you can't paste unless there's something on the Clipboard to be pasted.

Likewise, you can't Copy or Cut anything unless you have something
*selected* in your document that can be cut or copied.

If the problem goes deeper than that you'll need to supply some pertinent
information - What version of Word? What version of Windows? As well as any
additioninfo you can regarding addins or other utilities you might have
installed - it's frequently 3rd party "helpers" that interfere with
cut/copy/paste operations.
