cut out or hollowed out text? (visio 2003)

I am working on a printing project and have an issue with text boxes. I would like to create a text box with characters that are cut
out (hollow) to allow another layer to be visible through the characters. I have already created a new fill pattern and would
like that pattern to be visible through the characters.

Example:

Shape 1 (back layer) - square with Plaid bitmap pattern for the fill
Shape 2 (top layer) - text box with green fill
I would like the text typed into text box to be plaid or whatever fill pattern is used for shape 1

Can text be subtracted from a shape?
or
Can a new fill pattern be applied to text?

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can download stencils, drop characters, overlay with a rectangle,
and combine with menu Shapes/Operation/Combine, and fill combined
shape that have cutout of shapes.

These character shaped shapes were made using Word Art.
You can make another type of characters with Word Art,
and import to visio, copy and paste spacial as Windows,
ungroup and delete useless shapes.

An alternative method to try would be:
1.) Create your text. Set the background to some color, set the text to
white.
2.) Save As a png file. The png dialog will ask for background color and
can remain as black. Set the invisilble color to white.
3.) You can insert this file as picture. The text region should be hollow.
There may be some "png" artifacts, such as a white edging to the letters.

Anyway, it's just another possible approach.

I played around with resolution and color depth, not sure which worked the
best as I did both: set to 16B color, and resolution to printer (600bpi).
That removed the white edging artifacts.

Try playing with the glue options. Menu bar > tools > Snap & Glue. Don't
know if you have to enable all of the glue options, but, that does create the
desired behavior. You can tell that the glue takes place by the appearance
of the red square. Even though only one connector appears to be glued, it
does seem that the connection does hold.
