D drive

After 3 years of flawless performance, now when I try to access information
on a CD or burn files onto one, the drive opens itself and I get a message
telling me to insert a CD into the drive. (It's part of my laptop). I've
tried opening it, reinserting a CD, closing it, and trying again, but I keep
getting the same message. Any ideas?

Perhaps it has failed? They don't last forever.

If a lens cleaning doesn't help, you may try finding another system to
plug it into to try it there. Usually they are just replaced as they are
not too expensive. Or have a shop check it before you buy the replacement.

Well I can't find any cheap ones in the UK.......at all.
