Data Changes itself after I have inputted.

Can anyone help this luddite?

I am constructing a table in Excel and have a column showing monetary
amounts. However on one box, when I put the figure in then move on, the data
changes to a date (13/02/1900). Any help much appreciated (need to get this
to the accountant before HMRC jump on me, lol).

Hi Funky

The cell will have been formatted as a date. Select the offending cells and
press Ctrl + Shift + # to get General number formatting or Ctrl + Shift + $
to get Currency formatting

you need to change the format of cell. on the toolbar menu, click Format -->
Cells, and then choose from the list (other than date).

hope this helps.

I assume you are inputting the value as a decimal number, and not using your
system date delimiter.

If that is the case, then:

Select the errant cell.
Edit/Clear/Formats

If you are using a date delimiter in your value, then you may need to precede
the entry with an "=", but post back exactly what you are inputting and exactly
what you see.

Excel is "helpful" and tries to anticipate how you'd like the data to
display based on keystrokes you enter. When you got the displayed
result 13/02/1900 Excel thought you were entering a date, or perhaps
that cell was formatted as a date. That displayed output may also be
the result of a conflict between your computer's regional settings and
the type of data you entered.

What figure did you enter, and how is the cell formatted?

Just change the formatting of the cell. Right click on the cell and
select Format Cells. Make any adjustments that you need to to get the
desired outcome.
