Data Driven Site Confusion

D

David Brown

If I read everything correctly, in order to use the data
features in FP2003 I need to be utilizing a Server 2003
with SharePoint Services running.

The part I do not understand is, does the hosting company
need this, do I need this, or both?

If the user is required to have a server running Server
2003, isn't that really limiting the number of people who
can use these features?

Thanks,

David

The hosting company needs it.

Many of the features are designed for large corporate environments, which
will use Windows 2003 servers.

The trend in the corporate world is to upgrade to the latest operating
systems.

Some of your larger web hosts will migrate to the latest Windows servers as
a matter of a normal progession.

Some web hosts will not do so until it's absolutely necessary to upgrade.

Some may do so just to make the features available.

OK, then I must have a problem. I have the trial of
FP2003, and my host says they are running 2003 servers
with Sharepoint, but when I try to insert a data view, it
comes back with a response about needed a host with
Sharepoint.

Is there something that I have to do first that I am
missing?

Thanks.

Did you or your host 1st create a WSS site on the server, and do you have it open in FP
(you can't insert dataviews in a FP SE site)

To extend this comment, you will need to be connected to the virtual server
that sharepoint creates to store the web pages of the sharepoint portal.
Once you get into those you will no longer recieve those errors. My company
is migrating our intranet to SP when Im working on the old non-SP pages I get
that error but when I open SP site that is on the virtual directory(server) I
can insert the data view.

More specific to your original question: There are other options for data
features that dont require SP at all. Have you tried looking at the database
wizards included in sharepoint? They are useful when you arent publishing to
a SP virtual Server.
