data labels disappear

We have a chart with data labels placed just above the
bars which represent the FY flying hours for the current
plus past three years. For some reason, when we click
inside to update the data sheet the data labels
disappear. We're not sure but we think it may be a
problem involving the chart originally being in Office
2000, and now being manipulated by workstations using
Office XP are now corrupting it.
Have anyone seen anything like this before in Powerpoint?

I've not seen this happen, Guy, but if you want to email me a sample
slide, I can see if it does the same thing here. Please don't post the
slide -- just shoot it to me in email with a reminder of what it is I'm
looking at.
