Data Merge Error Too Many Worksheets

Good morning,

I'm trying to import an .xls 2003 document with headers and 1 worksheet
into Word as a mail merge. After driving to document and clicking the xls
file, I get dialog from Word titled "Select Table" and it shows two instances
of the 1 worksheet in the listing.

Is it my xls file or my word document that is corrupt? I have a copy of the
dialog in a gif file at:

I know I can resave as csv and txt and all those other billion formats, but
I thought for sure that I could trade native files between office apps. Am I
wrong??

I think I would just copy the first sheet to a new workbook.
