data source saying it is now main document

i made a mail merge and data source yesterday, today i went back in to merge and it says cannot merge because the data source is a main document. Please help.

Then, when you open the main merge document you made yesterday, do you get
an error message? If yes, what does it say - EXACTLY?

If that's not it, exactly when are you getting the message? And please tell
us exactly what it says. I think I recognize what you're describing, but
I'm just not 100% sure... especially without knowing which version of Word
is involved. And I don't want to confuse you even more :)
