Data Validation Greyed out

I've inherited a spreadsheet and want to add some data validation to
range of cells. However, when I select cells, the data validation men
item is greyed out. If i open a new spreadsheet it works fine. Ca
some tell me if i have to unset something in order for the validatio
menu item to work??
