I created a data model in Visio. When I try to generate a database in SQL
from the datamodel, the table and column descriptions do not tranfer.

Help!

What do you mean for 'transfer'? As I know every description you placed will
be generated into ddl file as sql comment like /*xxxx*/ If you import this
file into DBServer, the DBServer will ignore all comment. Then every
description in visio will not be placed into a database. your table or column
comment will not be existed.

I do not understand the word 'transfer' you said, could you please explain
it for more information?
