database model diagrams and notes

I've added notes to entities and columns within a DB diagram but how do you
include the notes in a print of the diagram?

B

Barb Way

Visio Professional doesn't have a way to print the NOTES for Entities or
Columns. There are no added reports, other than what you can see in the
diagram.

There is a version of Visio called Visio for Enterprise Architects, which
is not longer sold - but was bundled with Visual Studio 2005 Team editions.
The database solution in 'VEA' included additional reports. These reports
can include details such as Entity and Column level notes.

Please note : VEA is no longer available, and the version that was
included with VS2005 is based on the Visio 2003 version, Not on Visio 2007.
(No Visio 2007 version of VEA exists or is planned)

Pleased to know that I wasn't missing where the notes could be output BUT
why is it still possible to input them if its then impossible to include them

B

Barb Way

Because the drawings can be opened in the VEA versions, from which you can
print Reports that contain the notes information. In team groups, some
users will have Professional, while others have the VS Team / VEA combo
installed, and they will have the ability to print Reports.

you have to be kidding me? You create a tool that can extract an entire
database but you can't print off the schema (columns and notes). On top of
that the tool that did print this information isn't sold any more. Why do
you have this capability in the tool. I feel ripped off for the hours I
spent modeling the database and making changes.

i've gotta agree with wbd. seems like a step backwards was made. guess i
need to go to some other tool like erwin, system architech, or embardadero's
tool. geez. so, now i need to put notes in a word document and when it comes
time to generate the schema, i'll have to manually create it, which of course
will probably not quite match what i put into visio. smart. thanks for
making my life a little more difficult by wasting time.

Having known Barb for quite awhile, trust me, she's one of the good
guys. If you're really in the business of doing a lot of this please
understand that MS has decided that the building of tools to support
database systems other than their own is not the business they want to
be in. The function has been 'deprecated'.

Thanks, Al :)

Doug and WBD, this is the case, unfortunately. The decision was made with
Visio 2002 to split the advanced solutions for DB and UML modeling out to
the Visual Studio bundle, in a version called Visio for Enterprise
Architects (VEA). If you happen to have MSDN subscriptions available, you
can still install Visual Studio 2005 Team versions and then the bundled VEA
version. The latest version of VEA was built on the 2003 Visio engine, and
bundled with VS2005. No new versions will be created.

The reporting features, as well as forward engineering, were only ever
included in Visio Enterprise (2000 and older) and in VEA. No version of
Professional has included these.
