Date form fields fails to update when opening saved doc

I have many letters that are used over and over again and
I have set them up with form fields to automatically enter
the current date when the letter is opened. However,
lately, my Word 2002 has not been updating the field. You
have to unprotect the form and then reprotect it to make
the field update. Is there a patch that anyone knows of
that will fix this?

If the document is protected, it won't update because it is protected. If
you are repeatedly using the same letters, then use them to create
TEMPLATES. Insert the CreateDate in the template and this will insert the
current date in the new letter. If you are repeating much of the same text,
use AutoText to insert it. Repeatedly using documents again and protecting
them isn't the best way to work. Why are they protected?

I have the exact same error. I have a fax cover page template created in word with form fields in a protected form for entering details all of which are free text except for one which was set to display the current date and update automatically. The form has worked for ages but all of a sudden I have to unprotect it to update the date.
