Date Format Issue

In a cell I have a value 10/31/2004, but this cell is in
general format, when I change the cell to date with dd-mon-
yy format the date still remains the same, but I expect it
to change to 31-OCT-04.

Does anybody know the solution. Thanks in advance.

this is probably a text entry. Try formating the cell and re-enter this
value
