I have a spreadsheet with the date formats set. Whenever I enter new dates the values display as $38,000 or similar. Is this a bug or how do I stop it?

Excel picks up the system setting for date formats and currencies when EXCLThe cells are all formatted correctly in the Format / Number pane. They are
set to 01-MAR-08 which should display the leading zero on dates
During the session the format applies correctly. If you save the spreadsheet
and re-open, dates entered display as $ values such as $38,010.
I've also a second question open concerning a similar probelm with currencies.
If you format an entire column to £, save and close, all the values entered
display in $ when the sheet is re-loaded.
