date inconsistencies

I have an Excel column with dates that say, displays 5-
Aug-2003. When I merge this date field into Word it
displays it as 8-May-2003.

Why is this?

And how do I fix this?

Microsoft quotes the lcases as I detailed them - and I remember a problem a
while back where this was an issue, but sadly I cannot find it. I agree that
in practice it doesn't seem to matter much - which is why I said 'in theory'
:)
However, for UK date formats, neither will fix it if using OLEDB connection
to Excel :-(
