DDE connection

We have a access database which we use to merge letters which has been
working ok. However although the word template files that I have already
linked to the database are ok, I am now unable to merge any new templates as
I when I open the data source, select the database and choose access via dde,
I receive an error message saying:
"Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Microsoft Access to
complete the current task"

Any help would be much appreciated.
