defabghtml_href in HTML attachments

Hi can anyone tell me why Outlook (2003) sometimes chooses to alter
attached HTML files (i.e. not displayed inline) to alter references e.g.
to stylesheets by changing e.g. the href= to defanghtml_href=

How does Outlook decide whether to do this? It does not do it to all
HTML attachments.

Outlook doesn't do this - its your antivirus or antispam scanner, either
installed locally or on the mail server. A firewall that also supports
antivirus and antispam techniques might also do it.

Hmm... I understand what you're saying. I wonder why it allows some HTML
attachments through without alteration but not others? And yes I can see
this is a question for the firewall/antispam/antivirus experts :)

It's no different than why some good mail gets marked as spam. There is
something in the affected attachments that triggers it - words or links are
detected that seem to indicate it could be associated with a virus or spam.
If the server is doing it, rather than a client side addin, then the
messages are getting into the mailbox using different routes and the one
route does not use the application that is causing it.
