Default font colors

If I am typing in a document that already has a few paragraphs and want to
type new words in the document in a different color other than black, I
click on the font color button on the toolbar and click on "red" for
instance. When I type, it is in red but if my cursor goes on top of any of
the other black letters, the font goes back to black.

Is it possible to change the font color so that it stays the new color
regardless. I tried going to Format and then making the new color the
default for that document, but then the entire document turns to that color.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

If you turn on Track Changes, Word will automatically do this for you.
It will also mark text that you delete (instead of deleting it
outright). When you're done editing, you can go through each change
and accept or reject it (thereby resetting the color to the default,
usually black). The color & method it uses to mark different types of
changes can be set under Tools - Options - Track Changes.

Note that Track Changes isn't without its problems. For instance, if
you send the document to people who have never heard of the feature,
they'll sit there tearing their hair out, futilely trying to change
the red text back to black. Also, the fact that it doesn't delete
things outright can make it hard to figure out the pagination of the
edited document.

To find out more, look up 'Track changes while you edit' in the help.
