default location for Word docs?

Jeff

I'm helping an elderly lady move her data from her dead XP pc to a new
one running W7. I've installed her Word 2003 on the new PC but am trying
to locate her word docs on the old drive. Where does Word 2003 save its
documents to by default?
Thanks, Jeff

By default, documents are saved in the My Documents folder. The actual path
to that folder depends on the operating system and the Windows user name.
For Windows XP, expect something similar to C:\Documents and
Settings\NameHere\My Documents. Of course, "NameHere" should be replaced
with the actual user name. If no user name has been specified, and the
computer has been running from an Administrator account, the name is
probably Administrator.

An alternative approach would be *searching* for *.doc files on the old
computer.

"My Documents", which is probably mapped to a long and complex and difficult
to type path with spaces in it.

One of the first things I do with a new Windows computer is to map "My
Documents" to a short path off the root of a drive, so that it's easy to copy
files to and from it.

Thank you. I should have thought of searching for .doc files!

Thanks again.

Yes, I too create a separate data partition (or at least Data folder) to
which I move the my documents and other data. But that was not done by
this elderly person and I am hunting in a backup of her old drive to
find her Word documents. Searching for .doc files is an excellent
suggestion.

Thank you.
