Default Max number on datasheet

I have a field (Box Number) on a datasheet subform that gets its
default value from the maximum box number number in the table.
Unfortunately if a new maximum is entered it is too late for the next
record as it has already got its default value from the previous
maximum.

How do I dynamically update the default value?

It's not a good idea to store the opening value in this record if it depends
on the value in the previous record, for exactly the reasons you
experienced. Better to grab the previous value at runtime than to store it.
