How do I set a default player for music in my site ?

It used to be Real Player, but has just changed to Quicktime - I don't know
why

One option is to re-install Real Player...

This is not really a Frontpage question, I suggest you ask in a group (such
as comp.multimedia) about this. What you need to do is associate your media
files with whatever you want as your media player to play those particular
files e.g by default *.rm are Real Media and therefore played by Real Player
(not sure that anything else will play these - and same with QT (Quicktime
files).

Right click the music file, select an option like "Open with" and select the
media player you want. Hopefully that will associate all files of that type
with the player, and it will play them in that one every time.

it depends on the format (mp3, wav or midi for example will play in most
players these days) and which player can play a particular music file.

I don't think Quicktime will play Real Media for example and vice versa.
Media Player in Windows will play most formats except those like Quicktime
or Real media.

Can Windows Media Player play Quicktime or Real Media files?

I thought about where I should ask this question. It related to use of
webpages, but not directly to FrontPage.

Thanks for replying nonetheless. I will look at the group you suggested next
time.

I made the association and it worked.

Windows Media Player also works (it is a .mid file)

Its not exactly related to webpages, it is related to your
computers file associations.
Option1- In Windows Explorer >Tool >Folder Options >File
Types--- you can change the association for ALL file types
here. Your midi file can be opened with mplayer2, windows
media player, quicktime, realplayer, and musicmatch to name
a few.
Option2-In the program of your choice, find the preferences
on file associations and change the default behavior

Thanks to all for helping me with this OT query

May I extend your patience a little.

I have made the association of MID with Real Player and it works in Windows
Explorer, but in IE the file opens with QuickTime.

Is there a way to tell IE (or Firefox) that I want to open this file with
RealPlayer?
(The reason I don't want QuickTime is that I get a loud crackle of static
when QuickTime opens, which is very annoying. Also, the panel with
stop/start/play buttons is not as good.)

Is it something to do with plug-ins?
If so,
1. what are they named,
2. which folders are they placed in, and
3. where do I find them if they don't exist on my PC?

Hi all,

Problem solved.

I altered the options in QuickTime to *not* play .MID audio files, and lo
and behold, RealPlayer came up in place
