Default Task Type & Effort-Driven

Matthew Asbell

Is there a way to set the default task type in Project to
something other than Fixed Units? If so, in which versions
of Project can this be done, and how? Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You can't set the defaults. However, you can in a template from which you
can create new projects. You might like to see FAQ Item: 8. New Project
Template

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Matthew:

In Project 2002 and later (I don't recall if this applies to 2000 and
earlier), you can set these defaults from Tools > Options > Schedule tab.
These settings are stored in the local mpt file. In order to propagate these
defaults across the enterprise, you'd need to customize them at the time you
install Project on the workstations using a transform file or replace the
global.mpt file on existing workstations. Alternately, you can push these
through templates as Mike advises, then you need to train all PMs to use a
template to begin all projects.

OOOOps! Sorry, I forgot about the Set Default button - I should have looked
first :-(

Mike:

You were technically correct. In the Enterprise context, there's no
fool-proof way of setting this, but there are some less-than-perfect
workarounds.
