Define Duration

Lucy

Hi, I am using the MSP professional 2003. I find sometimes, a task
with a 2 hours duration for instance may split into 2 working days ie
0.5 hour in day one and 1.5 hours in day 2. Could anyone explain what
caused this and how to fix it? Thank you very much for your advice in
advance.

Hi Lucy, I expect the task is starting after 3.00pm on the 1st day, and
therefore needs to finish on the 2nd day. Define the date format so that it
includes hours, or expand the time view on the gannt chart and you should be
able to see the start/finish times.

Alternatively, you might have levelled the project and allowed it to split
tasks.

Hello Lucy,

I would guess that the 2 hour task begins 1/2 hour before the end of the
working day. If you are using the Standard calendar with the definition
of 08:00 to 17:00 as working time, the task begins at 16:30 the working
day stops at 17:00. The remaining 1.5 hour duration starts at 08:00 and
ends at 09:30.

To show time as well as date for start and finish, choose Tools >
Options, view tab and select a date format that shows time as well.

As to "why" -- the scheduling of tasks is affected by an number of
different things: start date/time of the project, project calendar
definition, predecessor/successor relationships, constraints, resource
calendars, and task calendars.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks, Julie & Ben. Actually the project calendar was set on 24 hours
starting from 10am and finishing 10:00pm due to the requirements of
the project.
