delay opening docs with symbols

I have an Ofc 2000 user with the following problem:
Any ppt or doc file he opens that has symbols -- many of
which were created with Equation Editor -- has a 15
second delay in opening. Same files open fine on another
computer. Same results, although not quite with new
file containing only a couple equation symbols.

Although this is a Win98 machine, everything is patched
(including Ofc2000) up to date, and the problem started
mysteriously with no other known software issues (such as
virus). I've reinstalled Ofc -- no change, reinstalled
Win --no change, and finally, renamed Windows to Winbak
and did a fresh install of the OS and Ofc -- still no
change. I deleted "c:\program files\Microsoft Office"
before the final install. System has plenty of virtual
swap space and device manager shows no problems.

Any ideas?

I run Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, and in that,
there is no option pulldown or Office plug-in as referred
to in the KB article relating to Norton Antivirus
products. I have tried disabling antivirus protection
with no change in the symptoms.

No, don't disable the antivirus protection altogether. If you had
another version of Norton/Symantec installed on the computer before
Corporate Edition, the officeav.dll file could still be registered.
Search for the officeav.dll file (include hidden files and directories)
on your computer, and note the path if you find it. Then click on Start
| Run, and in the "Open" box, type:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

including quotes, but replace <path> with the path of your officeav.dll
file. This unregisters just the Office Plugin; the computer will still
be protected by the antivirus software.

I would suspect temporary files (but not only *.tmp) as being the
culprit here.
