Delay when opening Excel files via Windows Explorer

This problem just began today on an employee's
workstation running Windows 2000 + Service Pack 4. She's
running Excel 2000 + Service Pack 3.

When opening Excel documents through Explorer, it takes
anywhere from 10 to 15 seconds to open. Running Excel
through the Start menu or the Run command line is
instantaneous. This machine is reasonably fast.

I booted into Safe Mode and no longer experienced the
issue. I assumed, then, that some program or service may
be causing the delay. Booted normally and ran AdAware and
Spybot, which picked up and removed a few hundred
objects. I rebooted again and the problem remained.

What is even more unusual is that there are several
suspicious programs running when I go to Task Manager -->
Processes. There was a save.exe, and two or three other
programs comprised of random letters. Didn't look legit.
When I attempted to close them, they reappeared shortly
afterwards.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
