Delete column not active on List toolbar

In Excel (Microsoft 2003) when trying to delete a column or row, the List
tool bar doesn't activate delete or add (they remain cloudy). What do I do?

It sounds like the worksheet has been protected. Unprotect the shee
and it souuld "uncloud" the options you want
