Delete key leaves a * instead of deleting

Please help, I am going mad over this one. My backspace key is working fine,
but my delete keeps on giving a * each time I press the key. What can I do to
get rid of this?

If I understand the problem correctly, right-click on any toolbar and select
Customise. Click on Keyboard at the bottom of the Customise dialog. With the
cursor in the window for Keyboard shortcut, pres the delete key: what does
Word report is assigned to the keystroke?
