Well, since the Mac keyboards I'm familiar with don't have a BACKSPACE key
I'm not sure what you're pressing
but it's most likely a matter of going
to: Word>Preferences> Edit, check the box for "Typing replaces selection".

Great, thank you! Easy ... when you know it. I only wonder how I got this box unchecked in the first place. (I don't expect you to answer that one!)
