Delete words by typing over them - not working!

Hi everyone,
i have searched but cannot find an answer to my problem :|

as described on this website
http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/Office03/Word03/basics.html
i can't do the following....:

"If you plan to replace the text you are deleting, first select the
text, and then start typing. The selected text disappears, and Word
starts inserting the new text."

what is actually happening to me is that the new text just goes infront
of the old text and the old text de-highlights itself and stays put.

it has only started happening recently... how do it fix this as it is
driving me nuts!

Cheers.

Have you checked your Insert Key setting? Look at the tray at the bottom
of your screen. You should see:
REC TRK EXT OVR WPH or something similar. If OVR (over write) is
grayed out you are in /Insert/ mode
and anything you type will be added to the existing text. If OVR is not
grayed out you are in over write mode.
To control whether the OVR is grayed out or not hit the Insert key to
get the desired effects.

I suspect you inadvertently hit the Insert key recently.

HTH,

Carl

i thought it might be that too Carl, but it isn't. If i select a word
and hit 'backspace' it doesn't remove the word either!
i appreciate you input and any thing else you might suggest would be
welcomed.

Cheers.
