deleted mail items have a strikeout through them

In Outlook 2003, deleted mail items have a strikeout through them until I
empty my Deleted Items folder. In other users' Outlook, deleted items are
simply moved to the Deleted Items folder. How do I change this behavior?

By changing from an IMAP account to a POP account.
