Sounds like you're using an IMAP account: deleting causes the message to
display with a line through it and then Edit>Purge removes it from the
display.
Why not open the Deleted Items folder and see if it's there? I suspect,
though, that your IMAP server doesn't have a Deleted Items folder. I just
tested it and, while the IMAP server I used does have a "wastebasket" folder
that is the equivalent of Outlook's Deleted Items folder, that folder
doesn't appear in the folder list displayed for the IMAP account and neither
does a Deleted Items folder.
