This is a bit confusing. Do you have a POP and an IMAP account? Do you have
mail forwarded from your POP to your IMAP or a rule set to copy from POP to
the IMAP account?

It sounds like you are using a gmail account as an IMAP account.

While Google claim this functionality, their version of IMAP bears no
relationship at all to anyone else's version if IMAP. The effect you
are seeing is because Google doesn't want your mail to leave their
system under any circumstances (remember, they rely on the content to
target you with appropriate ads) including not allowing it to be
deleted entirely by external mail clients.

If you are using gmail, set your gmail to POP not IMAP and create a
POP account to match it in Entourage. If you need to access the mail
from different places (by POP) then you will need to check the 'leave
mail on server' option in the account properties.
