Deleting messages from Entourage does notdelete them from Exchange

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

I know this is a problem others have seen, but I have tried following the standard solution (emptying the cache of the Inbox folder, in Entourage). Although this brings in the current items from Exchange, it does not solve the problem--I simply cannot delete Exchange items from without Entourage. They get deleted from the Entourage Inbox, but not from the Exchange storage. If I use OWA to browse (or look at email on my iPhone), all the deleted messages are still there. Any ideas?
