Deleting selected text

For some strange reason I can no longer delete text that has been "selected." For example, if I have highlighted several words of a sentence and hit the delete key, absolutely nothing happens. I have to click somewhere outside the selected area and then backspace the characters out one at a time.

I ran Detect and Repair. No messages were generated. The Detect and Repair program completed without requesting the installation disk. Nothing has changed. Now what do I do?

On the General tab of the Tools > Options dialog box, make sure the
options referring to WordPerfect are cleared, and then click OK.
