deleting without opening e mail

how do i delete an e mail message without opening it?
when i left click a message it opens right away,
also if i try to right click then delete ,it also opens as soon as i right
click it.
is there a way to highlight the message,then delete from my keyboard?
when i put my mouse pointer over the message ,it does not highlight

There is no danger opening message to delete them. The
danger is when you open attachments that may contain viruses.

Highlight the message--using the arrow keys if you can't use the mouse, hold
down the Shift key and press Delete.
