design resolution

What is the common or( best) resolution to design in for maximum viewability.
Thanks in advance.

Good answer! And it would be great if you had a second monitor set at 800 x
600 to view it!

I use 1024, 32bit color on 19" monitor and design for 750px wide browser.

This is not a easy question :)

Not sure I understand the question (or that the other two replies did):
if you mean what's best for you to look at while designing the
page/site, whatever you like... if you mean what's best for people who
will be viewing the site, use 800x600 -- there are still a LOT of people
out there who will visit your site at that resolution and if you make it
impossible to view your site without side-scrolling you are going to
annoy a lot of those people.

I would guess that the majority of people using 800x600 display
resolution are pretty much going to be browsing maximized -- honestly, I
can't recall ever seeing anyone at that resolution who wasn't, although
I don't pretend I've seen a statistically valid sample of all users...

Funny. I guess it's where you look. I don't recall seeing any "ordinary"
surfers at any resolution who browse maximized. Apply users never do (there
is no such option).

In addition to that. Even maximized at 800, you will get scrollbars on a
page with 800px wide content. I just design for 760px and let it go at
that.

Oops - Apply users = Apple users....

If this were geometry class, I would say QED.... 8)

I know this sounds weird, but after using IE for a zillion years I *just*
discovered Full View. I don't use it for designing but for soifing its
great - gets rid of almost all the junk on the screen. Dunno why I never saw
this before, but it's much easier on me peepers.

:)

I'd like to see one of those MS togatos. I didn't know they wore them. Is
that only while at work? 8)
