desktop e mail alert not working after advanced selection

I don't believe it!

Even after selecting the advanced options and clicking the tab for the desk
top to display the mail icon...it never works when mail arrives.

If it's on Windows XP, you may have to enable the icon in the Taskbar
properties.

I tried the taskbar. Turned off Hide inactive icons and still didn't work.
Any other ideas?
