This drove me nuts until I found out where to fix it.
Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Visual Effects.
Select the custom settings radio button and uncheck the option "Use drop
shadows for
icon labels on the desktop".
The default background color of your desktop should disappear so you only
see the icon titles.
