Desperate for help in Word 2000

I saved all of the chapters of a new book written in Word 2000 as separate files on a Zip disk and am now having trouble opening some of them. In some instances the file won't open and I get the message "This document or path is not valid. Try: Check the file permissions for the document or drive. Use the File open Diolog box to locate the document." I dont know what the first suggestion means by "file permissions" and the second suggestion doesn't work because I don't have the file back in the Word program and don't have a dialog box. When I tried copying the file first to "My Docs" on the HD I get the mesage "Cannot copy <file>: Access is denied. The source file may be in use." In one case the file opened as pages of little boxes instead of text. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Make a copy of the zip disk, or at least copy the files from it onto a hard drive for now

Run a thorough scandisk and defrag on the zip disk

Thanks but I don't think this will help. I can't copy the
files to my hard drive because I get the "Cannot copy
file" message referred to in the second part of my
original note. I haven't tried it but would the "Disk
Copy" procedure work in copying the entire Zip disk to
another Zip disk? If this can work, then I would try the
scan and defrag of the original Zip disk. I didn't know
you could do that for disks other tnan the HD. Thanks
again.disks. If I can copy the entire Zip disk I'll try t

Not that it helps now, but for future reference, do not use Word directly
with removable media: floppies, zip disks, CD-ROMs. You'll lose work if you
do. Use Word as if these media do not exist.

From within Windows copy to/from the removable media and the hard drive and
use Word with the material on the hard drive.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!

That's interesting. Why hasn't MS told us that somewhere,
somehow. I assume I can copy a Word file to My Docs on
the HD and then transfer it from there to another media
form without having problems. You know, it's extremely
frustrating for us novices trying to use these programs.
No need to answer if my assumption is correct and thanks
very much for your response.
