detect and repair problem

I am using Office 2003. I recently made some changes on my computer to the
registry using registry mechanic. After doing a cleanup Microsoft outlook
exhibits the following behavior. On startup it flashes the "Preparing to
install " window 6 or 7 times. Then if I click on new or forward or reply it
does it again and flashes the window several times.
I went to try and run detect and repair and I get the following error
message - 1612 - Installation source for this product not available. Verify
the source is available" I get the same error if I try to run setup on the
original CD. I cannot run setup at all.
I have been running normally for years.
I also noticed MSN desktop search will not run. The toolbar is there, but if
i try to update it or uninstall it tells me source is unavailable.
Also of note, all other windows programs run fine without incident. Outlook
and desktop search are the only ones with a problem. Word, exce work just
fine, but if I run detect and repair it gets the same error message.
I have every update for office and windows xp.

Also maybe co-incidental I installed the last update last week and then this
problem appeared. It may not have been caused by the registry changes, and
actually probably was not, because when I restore a registry from a month ago
i still have the problem. I saw something about a problem with the 1.1 MSI,
so maybe that is it. what do I do for this problem?
Suggestions anyone and thanks for your help.

That was a contribution, since a third party tool was used I have no way of
knowing what damage was done by it.
