Determining Text Line Height

Is there a way to determine the height of a line of text?

I want to create artwork similar to the revision marks of Track Changes but
I can't figure out to determine the height of a line of text.

I saw that before but I still don't think it gives me the information I'm
looking for. For example, if you highlight some text, how could you figure
out the bounding box of the highlight itself (usally the black selected
area)? This area seems to incorporate the text size, line size, line spacing,
etc. The same is true for the track changes revisions line in the margins.

Word really doesn't give you anything better, if the line height hasn't been set
to a specific measurement.
